Health and Education
Good health and basic education are two indispensable building blocks for assuring productive human resources, quality livelihoods, and the effective involvement of people in civil society and governmental processes. TANGO International works with NGOs, local governments and agencies of international cooperation to improve the quality of their programming in both of these critical areas by providing targeted training, technical assistance, assessments and operations research, project design and evaluations, and policy analysis and development. Our efforts focus on increasing access of the most vulnerable populations to quality health and education services. TANGO specialists have extensive experience and professional training in both the management and technical aspects of delivering primary health care services and of providing basic and technical education. Our work to improve public health covers three critical determinants -- behavioral change for healthy life styles, quality, cost-effective health care delivery systems, and environmental health. We work to improve the quality and relevance of basic education - particularly for women and girls’ vocational/technical training, and graduate level programs for local professionals. In both health and education, TANGO builds on close linkages with specialized national and international organizations and universities. Development of Food and Livelihood Security tools for a Pandemic Influenza Preparedness and Response Toolkit
Oct 2008 - Oct 2009 Under the AI.COMM project, TANGO collaborated with the Academy for Educational Development (AED), Management Sciences for Health STOP-AI project, Links Media, the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO), and the CDC/ NMRC to create tools and guidelines for pandemic influenza preparation, response, and recovery.

The toolkit’s main objective is to strengthen the capacity of municipal response to a pandemic influenza by mapping out key issues, providing guidance on necessary municipal priority actions, determining populations most at risk, and building community and household resilience through awareness raising activities. TANGO’s contributions include a range of tools that address food and livelihood security and community volunteer organization during a pandemic influenza, as well as community recovery following a pandemic influenza.

American Red Cross Avian Influenza KAP survey
May 2008 - Jul 2008 As of 2008, Indonesia has had 132 confirmed cases of Avian Influenza, of which over 80 percent have been fatal. The American Red Cross, in collaboration with the Indonesian Red Cross (Palang Merah Indonesia), consulted TANGO to oversee a quantitative survey for the Avian Influenza (AI) program working in four provinces in Indonesia. The survey investigated three target populations, households, “wet” markets, and school-aged children. The data evaluated the current impact of ARC and PMI programming as well as provided recommendations and guidance for future AI interventions using accepted and established indicators. Safe Water Systems Baseline Survey
Indonesia Dec 2003 - May 2005 Centers for Disease Control (CDC) / USAID

TANGO designed and supervised a quantitative and qualitative survey to determine baseline values of important indicators of drinking water sources, water quality, storage and use practices, and household measures used to ensure safe water. These baseline values were used for comparisons to determine behavioral changes that take place as a result of development efforts by U.S. and United Nations organizations. The survey collected demographic and livelihood data in order to disaggregate water use behaviors by important household-level socio-economic criteria. Then, TANGO worked with local consultants to determine key aspects of water use to guide refinement of strategies to increase the use of safe water in Tangerang Municipality and Mauk (a peri-urban area of Tangerang District).
