Urban Livelihoods
Urbanization is perhaps the most dominant demographic process of the last 20 years. Urban dwellers must pay for goods and services and the cost of subsistence for urban households is likely to be significantly higher than for rural households. Households living in urban poverty face a variation of the challenges faced by those in a rural context. In times of food shortage, households will employ a set of coping strategies which are specific to an urban context. Urban households experience a shift in access to formal and informal safety nets when moving from a rural setting. Their access to formal safety nets may increase while traditional support networks do not provide the same level of support as in a village setting. TANGO works with multiple partners to identify urban needs through qualitative and quantitative livelihoods assessments and to design programs based on survey findings and local historical context.
