Agriculture and market systems

TANGO regularly assesses agricultural interventions. Many of the programs that TANGO evaluates contain components related to improving farming practices and strengthening agricultural value chain and market systems. TANGO has executive officers and consultants with decades of expertise in farming systems and agricultural livelihood development. See also the livelihoods expertise page.

TANGO has a long history of collaboration with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). In 2016, TANGO conducted the final evaluation of the Improved Global Governance for Hunger Reduction Program (IGGHRP). The IGGHRP worked to improve food security and nutrition governance coordination and information at global, regional, and national levels (including 50 countries). IGGRHP included community-based approaches to improve farmers’ livelihoods (e.g., Farmer Field Schools). The TANGO evaluation team conducted an extensive desk review of IGGHRP-funded information products and triangulated data with over 120 in-person key informants, focus groups, and Skype interviews with priority stakeholders in Rome, Brussels, and two case study countries, Kenya and Niger. The team conducted two case study missions to assess the results of country and regional components. TANGO’s recommendations informed the redesign of two spin-off programs: Food and Nutrition Security Impact, Resilience, Sustainability and Transformation (FIRST) and the Information for Nutrition, Food Security and Resilience for Decision Making (INFORMED). See the evaluation report here.

Other key projects include:
  • Conducted the baseline and endline impact evaluation surveys and recurrent monitoring surveys (RMS) for the Pastoralist Areas Resilience Improvement and Market Expansion (PRIME) Project, USAID/Mercy Corps (2014-2019). PRIME includes agricultural and value chain development components. See the baseline report here.
  • Conducted baseline assessments for the CARE WE-RISE Pathways program across six countries in Asia and Africa, aiming to increase the productivity and empowerment of women smallholder farmers (2016). See the final report here.
  • Assessed the diffusion of submergence-tolerant rice in India (2017).
  • Reviewed post-harvest agricultural losses in multiple African countries (2012).
